Dr. Thiele is Division Chief, Critical Care Anesthesiology at the University of Virginia. His clinical practice is in cardiac anesthesiology and critical care. Originally trained as an engineer, his research interests fall into two broad categories – validation and development of technology to improve perioperative care, and development and testing of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery protocols, including prehabilitation. His research has been funded by the Ivy Foundation, The Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists, the National Institutes of Health, and Apple.
His educational efforts focus on the use of technology to improve education – he is a co-founder of OpenAnesthesia and authored one of the first ultrasound focused iBooks, “Cardiac and Critical Care Ultrasonography.” Dr. Thiele is an assistant editor at Anesthesia & Analgesia and is on the Editorial Board of Canadian Journal of Anesthesia. In addition to his academic interests, Dr. Thiele is passionate about the intersection of healthcare and finance. He serves on the Board of Directors of the University Physicians Group, as well as on the Finance Committee and Investment Subcommittee.
