Dr. Jeffery S. Vender is the Emeritus, Harris Family Foundation Chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology at NorthShore University Health System in Evanston, Illinois. He is a Clinical Professor at the University Of Chicago Pritzker School Of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois. He is a past member of the NorthShore University Health System Faculty Practice Associates Board of Directors, Past Chair of the Medical Executive Committee for the Professional Staff at NorthShore and previously served on NorthShores Board of Directors.
Dr. Vender graduated from Northwestern University in 1971 with a BS in Biology, received his MD degree in 1975 and his MBA in 1998 (Kellogg School of Management). Upon completion of his residency and fellowship training in Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine he joined the staff at NorthShore University Health System formerly Evanston Hospital and the Department of Anesthesiology in 1979. Dr. Vender served as Chair of Anesthesia since 1990-2015. In 1996, Dr. Vender received an appointment of adjunct Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Northwestern University.
He served as the Director of the Critical Care Services at Evanston Hospital from 1987-2000 and the Interim Chairman at Northwestern University Department of Anesthesiology from July 1999 until October 2000.
In addition to his roles and activities at NorthShore, Dr. Vender has served as the President of the Illinois Society of Anesthesiologists and the American Society of Critical Care Anesthesiologists. Dr. Vender has previously served on the Board of Medical Advisors of the American Association of Respiratory Care; and the Board of Trustees of American College of Chest Physicians, past Board of Directors of Deltex Medical and Metasensors. Dr Vender currently serves on the Boards of Adeptus Health, results Physiotherapy and Wirtz Corporation.
Among his various awards, Dr. Vender received the William O. McQuiston Award for outstanding contribution to anesthesiology ,the Distinguished Service Award by the Illinois Society of Anesthesiology and was recently elected
as a Master of Critical Care Medicine by the Society of Critical Medicine . He has also received the Schaffner Award from the Kellogg School of Management where he served as Chair of the Kellogg Advisory Board from 2005-2007.
Dr. Vender has participated and Chaired numerous state and national committees of various medical organizations, edited several medical texts, has published over 125 articles and book chapters and has been an invited lecturer at over 250 national and international meetings, on topics in the of anesthesiology, critical care, organizational change and leadership. In addition Dr. Vender serves as an editor and/or reviewer for many medical journals. He has served as an advisor/consultant to numerous medical device and pharmaceutical companies, as well as venture and private equity groups.
Dr. Vender has been married 42 years to Barbara (Bobbie) F. Vender and has two children-Kim (Steve) and Todd (Jeannine) and six grand children- Ryan, Wiley, Jeffery “Jack”, Gavin and Margaux and Pierce.
