Dr Rafael Blanco
I obtained my Medical degree from the University of Santiago de Compostela, Spain in 1992. Soon after I moved to Liverpool as a House officer to feel the Beatles soul in the air. I moved to Morriston Hospital, Swansea where I developed my passion for Regional Anaesthesia in the Burns and Plastic Unit. I still love to pieces welsh people, their music, poetry and their way of living. Perhaps because I am Galician I share many cultural links with the welsh traditions.
In 1998 I moved into Guy’ & St Thomas for higher training into Anaesthesia. I am the founder and chairman of the London Society of Regional Anaesthesia (www.lsora.com) and since 2006 we have trained hundreds of anaesthetists with our workshops and courses. We also promote trainees with grants and prizes to the best posters in our annual meetings.
Because my other passion is computer programming I designed an online anaesthetic logbook, combining mathematical models (learning curves) together with a complete and interactive logbook (www.anesthesialogbook.com). My aim is to provide the users a method to record and analyze their progress with their blocks, together with maintaining the number of cases performed in a well-organized way. This is useful at any level for revalidation.
I have written several articles for regional anaesthesia books plus some papers in the usual medical magazines. I teach at national and international level.
I enjoy my family and nature. I believe that in life we have to make a difference. People that know me well say I am a lateral thinker, creative, hardworking person. I show maximum respect to the senior people that directed me in life. I will always be part of hard working groups to try to promote regional anaesthesia.
