Dr. Anoushka Afonso is an Associate Professor of Clinical Anesthesiology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK), where she is the Director of Enhanced Recovery Program. She earned her medical degree at Georgetown University School of Medicine, where she also worked at the National institutes of Health in molecular genetics. She then completed her residencies in both Internal Medicine and Anesthesiology at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York before joining Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in 2013.
Her main areas of expertise are in perioperative medicine, enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS), pain management in the perioperative setting, and patient outcomes (short and long-term) after cancer surgery. She has authored and lectured on these topics nationally and internationally. Dr. Afonso facilitates multidisciplinary collaboration to ensure patient-centered evidence-based care for cancer patients. She also serves as Director of the MSK Pipeline program which offers medical students an opportunity to participate in research in the field of oncology and is a mentor to many.
