Darin J. Correll, MD is the Director of the Acute Postoperative Pain Service and the Administrative Director of Resident Education in the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. He is an Assistant Professor of Anaesthesia at Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Correll received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts and his Medical Doctorate degree from Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He completed a residency in anesthesiology and a two-year clinical and research fellowship in Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain Management at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. He is certified as a Diplomat of the American Board of Anesthesiology.
Dr. Correll is very active in education regarding pain management. He regularly teaches medical students; anesthesiology, surgery and internal medicine residents, fellows and attendings; nurses; nurse practitioners; and pharmacists at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He has also spoken many times locally, regionally and nationally on the topic at various meetings and as a visiting lecturer. He has numerous publications including original articles, abstracts, book chapters, reviews, educational materials and clinical communications on various topics related to perioperative pain management.
Dr. Correll’s clinical research focuses on postoperative pain assessment/management and the value of preoperative clinics in identifying and resolving medical issues that can impact operating room efficiency.
Locally, Dr. Correll is the Chair of the Acute Pain Management Committee and is a member of the Pain and Sedation Management Committee and the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Internationally, he is one of the founders of the Society for Perioperative Assessment and Quality Improvement, where he presently serves as the President of the Society, on the Governing Board, and as the website (www.spaqi.org) editor.
