Rob Shakar MD is the Medical Director of a 32-physician group in Wilmington, NC.  Dr. Shakar oversees the Perioperative Surgical Home (PSH) Project for New Hanover Regional Medical Center (NHRMC).  NHRMC began the PSH project with the Hip/Knee Total Joint service line and expanded to a total of 15 service lines since 2015.

In the initial year the Total Joints PSH project created more than $4 million in savings by optimizing the patients for surgery and streamlining their supply chain expenditures. In 2016, the American Society of Anesthesiology (ASA) recognized Dr. Shakar’s Wilmington group as an industry-leading innovator in the PSH.  Dr. Shakar now serves as the Chair of the Perioperative Surgical Home steering committee for the ASA.
