Emma McCone has been a preoperative assessment nurse for over 20 years at Newcastle hospitals, and after completing her MSc in perioperative medicine, is currently seconded to the national lead role for preoperative assessment (POA) with the GIRFT programme.

Her interests are specifically around reducing variation across POA and creating a national network to ensure that teams have standardised pathways and peer support.

She has been involved in authoring POA specific guidance, variation in surgical postponements at POA as a BJS paper and also has a passion for helping teams to review workforce requirements for this specialised area of practice.
