Dr. Michael C. Grant is an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine (ACCM) at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Grant received his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine followed by residency in anesthesiology at The Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions. Thereafter he completed dual fellowship training in Surgical Critical Care and Cardiothoracic Anesthesia and his Masters in Systems Engineering from the Johns Hopkins Whiting School of Engineering & Applied Physics Laboratory.

His research interests include Perioperative Medicine, Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS®), and Systems Engineering. Michael’s main focus involves the development and integration of complex perioperative systems, including utilization of manpower, resources and technology to improve health care efficiency and patient outcome.

Michael is the Director of Anesthesiology for the ERAS umbrella program at Johns Hopkins, a core faculty member of the Johns Hopkins Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality, an Executive Board member of the ERAS® Cardiac Surgery Society and a consultant for the national Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality Improving Surgical Care and Recovery contract, which endeavors to implement ERAS principles and practices across 750 hospital across the United States.

He has been actively engaged in the creation and publications of a number of national and international perioperative guidelines, the most recent of which include efforts sponsored by the Analgesic, Anesthetic, and Addiction Clinical Trial Translations, Innovations, Opportunities and Networks (ACTTION) collaborative, the Perioperative Quality Initiative (POQI) and International ERAS Society. His work has led to the development of numerous institutional, national and international perioperative programs, the results of which have contributed to more than 50 peer-reviewed publications, numerous book chapters and more than 30 national and international presentations.
