Mike Grocott is the Professor of Anaesthesia and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Southampton, director of the Southampton NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (2022-27), chair of the BRC director’s forum (2025-27) and an NIHR Senior Investigator (reappointed 2022). He was formerly NIHR CRN national specialty lead for Anaesthesia Perioperative Medicine and Pain (2015-2020).
Mike is a council member and trustee of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (2016-2026) and was previously elected vice-president (2019-20). He served on the board of the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine (2013-2016) and was president of the Critical Care Medicine section of the Royal Society of Medicine (2017-19). He was the founding director of the Health Services Research Centre at the Royal College of Anaesthetists (2010-15), founding chair of the UK National Emergency Laparotomy Audit (2011-16) and served as chair of the National Institute of Academic Anaesthesia (NIAA) Board and Council between (2018-2024).
Mike is joint editor-in-chief of Perioperative Medicine, leads the Xtreme Everest Oxygen Research Consortium, and co-leads the Fit-4-Surgery research collaboration. He has authored/co-authored more than 420 scientific manuscripts and been awarded more than £60 million in grant funding. He is an adjunct professor of Anesthesiology at Duke University School of Medicine in North Carolina (USA) and honorary professor at University College London.
