Director of the Institute of Health Equity (UCL Department of Epidemiology & Public Health)
Sir Michael Marmot has been Professor of Epidemiology at University College London since 1985, and is Director of the UCL Institute of Health Equity. Marmot has led research groups on health inequalities for nearly 50 years.
As Chair of the WHO Commission, Marmot set out his ambition to create a global movement on social determinants of health. He has since Chaired Regional Commissions, and reviews on tackling health inequality for UK governments. Coventry declared itself a Marmot City in 2010. Marmot and his team at the UCL Institute of Health Equity (IHE) have been commissioned by cities and regions to bring their evidence-based approach to health equity into action at local level. Now, 50+ communities in England have declared themselves as acting on Marmot principles.
IHE have now produced a report with Gwent in Wales with similar recommendations. Public Health Scotland has commissioned a two-year programme of work on social determinants of health, including three Scottish Marmot Communities.
In 2000 he was knighted for services to epidemiology and the understanding of health inequalities. He was appointed a Companion of Honour for services to public health in the 2023 New Year Honours.
