Dr Peter Nightingale MBBS, FRCA, FRCP, FFICM
Consultant in Anaesthesia & Intensive Care Medicine
Dr Peter Nightingale has been President of the Royal College of Anaesthetists since September 2009 and was formerly President of the Intensive Care Society.
Having trained in anaesthesia and worked in internal medicine, he chose to make intensive care medicine his area of special expertise; he has been a consultant at the University Hospital of South Manchester since 1986.
Dr Nightingale has published and lectured extensively on many aspects of intensive care practice including haemodynamic support, acute lung injury, scoring systems and costing.
His other external duties include:

� Member, Department of Health Medical Programme Board
� Member, NHS Future Forum
� Member, Centre for Workforce Intelligence Reference Group
With retirement looming next year he has developed an interest in the history and ethics of intensive care medicine.
