President of the Royal College of Anaesthetists
A clinical academic with a focus on quality improvement and perioperative care, Professor Ravi Mahajan began his term as elected President of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCoA) in September 2018, in addition to his role as Professor of
Anaesthesia and Intensive Care at University Hospitals, Nottingham.
Over more than a decade of roles with the College, Professor Mahajan has led work to attain NICE accreditation of the RCoA’s Guidelines on the Provision of Anaesthetic Services and helped to disseminate best practise through his role as Editor-in-Chief of the peer review journal, the British Journal of Anaesthesia (BJA), guiding it to become the world’s pre-eminent anaesthetic journal.
With 30 years’ experience in the NHS, Ravi cites the development of a culture that instinctively puts patient safety first in all considerations as the most positive and significant change he has seen in his time as a clinician. Equipping healthcare professionals with the tools and methods to drive quality improvement from the hospital front-line has been a success story for Medical Royal Colleges, including the RCoA, and is one area where Ravi hopes to help to deliver further progress during his
term as President of the College.
