Dr David Shipway is a Consultant Physician and Gerontologist, who specialises in the medical care of frail and multi-morbid patients undergoing surgery. His role is to provide preoperative comprehensive geriatric assessment, and to support post-operative management of medical complications and rehabilitation whilst embedded in the surgical team.
David trained at Oxford University, and completed his medical training at hospitals throughout London. He undertook specialist fellowship training in perioperative geriatric medicine at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in the “POPS” Service. He was appointed as a Consultant Physician at St Mary’s Hospital, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust in 2014 where he established a service delivering embedded medical support for older patients undergoing gastrointestinal surgery. In 2017 he moved with his young family to the countryside. He is currently developing a vascular surgery liaison service at Southmead Hospital, North Bristol NHS Trust.
His specialist interests lie in service delivery for the older surgical patient, frailty and cognitive disorders in the perioperative period.
