Nottingham Medical School graduate, Senior Registrar Royal Perth Hospital Western Australia, appointed Consultant Anaesthetist with an interest in Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia and Intensive Care at Manchester Royal Infirmary in 1985. Setup Acute Pain Service and developed Blood Conservation techniques. Chairman of the Association of Cardiothoracic Anaesthetists (ACTA) 1996-2000. President of the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland (AAGBI) 2006-2008. Currently elected Council member of the Royal College of Anaesthetists, member of National Blood Transfusion Committee, member of European Board of Anaesthesiology (EBA) of the UEMS, Chair of EBA Patient Safety Committee and member of the Safety Committee of the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesia (WFSA). Presently promoting the Helsinki Declaration on Patient Safety in Anaesthesiology, Medication Safety, Prefilled Syringes, Global Pulse Oximetry and increased use of Capnography.
